ELAN®AC34 TO CONTROL SALMONELLA AND E.COLI IN BROILERS

04/12/2024 Poultry

Poultry health and productivity face significant challenges due to the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria, such as E. coli and Salmonella. These pathogens, commonly found in the gut of poultry, are classified as opportunistic, meaning they exploit weakened immune systems to cause disease. Olus has developed Elan® AC34, an advanced liquid feed additive designed to support a healthy and balanced gut, with strong antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella.

TRANSMISSION AND DISEASE IMPACT E.COLI AND SALMONELLA

E. coli and Salmonella can be transmitted through contaminated feed, water, and equipment. Additionally, Salmonella can be vertically transmitted from parent birds to chicks, while E. coli can spread from older hatcheries. Once the birds are immuno-compromised, these bacteria can enter the bloodstream, causing serious conditions such as:

  • Septicemia
  • Diarrhea
  • Airsacculitis
  • Pericarditis and Perihepatitis
  • Lymphocytic depletion of the bursa and thymus

Young chicks are particularly vulnerable, often developing conditions like omphalitis and paratyphoid disease.

LIMITATIONS OF TRADITIONAL TREATMENTS

Traditional treatments rely heavily on antibiotics, but the overuse of these drugs has led to the emergence of multi-drug resistant strains of E. coli and Salmonella. While organic acids are sometimes used as an alternative, their effectiveness is limited to the upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT) due to their dissociation constants (pKa values).

OUR INNOVATIVE SOLUTION: ELAN®AC34

At Olus, we have developed Elan® AC34, a unique liquid feed additive. Elan®AC34 is a powerful blend of glycerides derived from short-chain organic acids: Mono-propionin (C3) and Mono-butyrin (C4). Elan®AC34 shows:

  • Antimicrobial Action: C4 has demonstrated strong antimicrobial properties, including downregulation of 17 genes in the Salmonella Pathogenicity Island (SPI-1).
  • Gut Health Improvement: C4 nourishes gut cells and stimulates mucus-producing goblet cells, enhancing immunity. It also strengthens tight junction proteins, preventing microbial penetration.

Key Benefits of Elan®AC34

  1. Active throughout the entire GIT
  2. Enhances feed intake
  3. No risk of microbial resistance
  4. Improves calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) metabolism

Usage Guidelines

  • For clinical disease: Use 1 liter per 1,000 liters of drinking water for 3 days.
  • To improve feed intake: Use 500 ml per 1,000 liters for 7 days.
  • For layers: Administer 1 liter per 1,000 liters for one week every three weeks.
  • Preventive use in broilers: Use 500 ml per 1,000 liters for 2 days each week from the first week until slaughter.

CONCLUSION

Elan®AC34 is a cutting-edge solution to the challenges of poultry health by enhancing gut health and preventing disease without contributing to antibiotic resistance. This unique liquid feed additive, developed and manufactured by Olus, is a valuable product for poultry farmers looking to improve productivity and animal welfare naturally.
