SUPPORT PERFORMANCE IN AGP-FREE BROILER FARMING

04/06/2025 Poultry

In the high-pressure environment of intensive poultry farming, gut health directly affects performance. But how can gut health be supported without antibiotics? With growing awareness about sustainable farming, more producers choose for AGP-free farming and are turning away from antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) and chemical additives.

To support this shift, Olus conducted a field trial in collaboration with the University of Agriculture in Faisalabad (Pakistan). They tested the effects of Olus®Cox Liquid: a natural (phytogenic) feed additive added directly to broiler drinking water. In this blog you’ll discover how it improves feed efficiency, gut health, and bird immunity — making it a valuable tool in AGP-free poultry production.

Trial setup

Materials and methods

Seven treatment groups were evaluated, receiving Olus®Cox Liquid through their drinking water at dosages of 350, 500, and 750 ml per 1,000 litres of water, applied between day 19 and 30 of age.

Note: All birds were fed an AGP- and coccidiostat-free diet (no antibiotics or anticoccidial drugs).

About the research team

This trial was conducted under practical field conditions by:

  • Dr. Waseem Abbas (Ph.D.) – Principal Investigator
  • Muhammed Hannan – Student at M. Phil. Animal nutrition

They tested Olus®Cox Liquid under field conditions, making the results highly relevant for commercial broiler operations.

Results

Which improvements were seen?

The best performance was observed in groups T4 and T5, which received 500 ml per 1,000 litres of drinking water. The group with a lower dose (T3: 350 ml over a longer period) also came close.

Key improvements included:

  • Better feed intake and growth
Broilers consumed more feed and gained more body weight.
  • Healthier gut microbiota
The levels of good bacteria (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) increased, while harmful bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella and Clostridium decreased.
  • Reduced signs of coccidiosis
Levels of the common parasite Eimeria tenella were found in lower amounts, reducing the risk of gut damage.
  • Stronger gut structure
Microscopic analysis showed better villus length and villus-to-crypt ratio, meaning the gut was in healthier condition to absorb nutrients.
  • Stronger immune response
Birds showed higher levels of antibodies against common poultry viruses like IBV and NDV.

What is Olus®Cox liquid?

Olus®Cox Liquid is a phytogenic-based feed additive. That means it contains plant-derived ingredients known to support digestion and immunity. The different natural molecules work synergistically with each other to boost feed/water intake, improve immunity and help birds overcome critical challenges.

Recommended dossages

If you’re raising AGP-free broilers without, Olus®Cox Liquid can be a helpful part of your program. Based on different recent trials, this product works best at:

  • 500 ml per 1,000 L drinking water from day 19–23, or
  • 350 ml per 1,000 L from day 19–30 (if used over a longer period)

These protocols are easy to apply on-farm and fit well in AGP-free systems.
